The New York Knicks are reportedly looking at a number of high-profile names as they continue their search for their next head coach.
According to Ian Begley of SNY, New York plans on interviewing at least eight candidates before wrapping up the search prior to the NBA‘s planned restart in Orlando, Florida, on July 30.
Begley noted “there is some support in the organization” for Hall of Famer Jason Kidd, while former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown has generated “interest.” A source also said San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon is someone to “keep an eye on.”
The report also listed Chicago Bulls assistant Chris Fleming, Knicks interim head coach Mike Miller, former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, former Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau, and former Knicks head coach Mike Woodson as candidates to be interviewed.
Begley reported “agents and coaches who have a vested interest in the Knicks' process have long believed that new team president Leon Rose is most likely to hire Thibodeau. But there is legitimate internal support for Atkinson.”
While Kidd is best known for his career as a Hall of Fame point guard, he was the head coach of the Nets in 2013-14 and the Milwaukee Bucks the following four seasons until he was fired in January 2018. He has a 183-190 record as a head coach and is currently an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Brown was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-06 through 2009-10 and again in 2013-14. He was also the head coach of the Lakers in 2011-12 and five games in 2012-13 and has amassed a 347-216 career record.
He helped direct the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals with LeBron James leading the way on the court.
Hammon would be the first woman head coach in NBA history if the Knicks hired her. She became the first full-time, paid female assistant in league history when the Spurs hired her in August 2014.
Whoever the Knicks hire will be faced with a daunting task given their spot among the league's bottom-feeders.
New York went 21-45 this season, which was not good enough to be invited to Disney World for the 22-team restart. It marked the franchise's seventh straight losing campaign. The Knicks have won one playoff series since making the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals.
