Calgary police have charged a man with second-degree murder in a Forest Lawn shooting that killed one man and injured another.

On Monday, police arrested Samuel Lugela, 28, of Calgary, at a home in downtown Calgary on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder.

The accused is the older brother of Nelson Lugela, who was convicted last year of second-degree murder in the killing of Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks. The family relationship was confirmed to CBC News by Nelson Lugela's lawyer.

Nelson Lugela shot Hicks in 2016 after getting into an argument with the football player's teammates at the Marquee nightclub.

On Saturday, at approximately 2:50 a.m., police were called after receiving reports that two groups were involved in a shooting in Forest Lawn.

Calgary police said the shooting took place outside the Portico Hookah Lounge, at 1806 35th Street S.E. Police believe the two groups of men became involved in an argument inside the lounge and were asked to leave.

After leaving the lounge, the argument became more intense and the shooting took place. After the gunfire, one of the shooting victims attempted to drive to the hospital but crashed his vehicle, police said.

Officers discovered the man had driven into a barricade near the CTrain station at 36th Street and 26th Avenue N.E. He was taken to hospital, where he died as a result of his gunshot wounds.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, after which his identity will be released.

Another man who police say was initially believed to be a bystander was also shot. He was taken to hospital and is in stable condition. Police are still working to determine his involvement.

Police said they are in the process of reviewing security camera footage of the incident and said additional charges are likely against others involved.

It's believed there are other witnesses to the confrontation who have yet to come forward, police said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Calgary police homicide unit through its tip line at 403-428-8877 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
