Two homes were destroyed and two others damaged after a fire in southeast Calgary on Sunday.
Fire crews responded to the 1000 block of Copperfield Boulevard S.E. at 1:45 p.m.
Batt. Chief Bruce Barrs said on arrival, crews encountered two homes fully engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening a third home.
Neighbouring homes were evacuated as crews fought to extinguish the fire.
Barrs said crews will remain on scene into the evening to ensure the fire is completely out he said. ATCO and Calgary police were both still on scene as well as of 4:30 p.m.
A woman was assessed on scene by EMS for possible smoke inhalation, and 10 to 12 people have been displaced from their homes.
Another challenge amid the evacuation was maintaining guidelines in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Barrs said.
Firefighters called out over a loudspeaker to remind evacuees to maintain a physical distance of two metres from others, and only gather with their own family or household, as a small crowd of evacuees and onlookers convened nearby.
“The public civilians that were on scene kind of witnessing this were receptive and respectful of that social distancing and the message that we were giving them,” Barrs said.
Investigators are working to determine what started the fire.
