Patrick Mahomes won the Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs, but the quarterback will reportedly have to wait for at least several months before inking a new long-term contract extension.
On Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported the two sides are expected to “take their time” and likely won't finalize the “monster” extension until after April's draft.

From @NFLTotalAccess: The #Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are trying to build a dynasty, so expect them to take their time working out his (monster) contract extension, which probably won't be done until after the draft. @nflnetwork https://t.co/oyfqhShios
Kevin Patra of NFL.com called Mahomes signing a deal with the Chiefs prior to the 2020 season “the most likely scenario” even though he is not scheduled for unrestricted free agency until 2022.
Patra also suggested the reigning Super Bowl MVP will “leapfrog” Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's league-leading mark of $35 million per year.
It would be little surprise if Mahomes surpasses that number considering it would be difficult to script a better start to his career. The 24-year-old fell to the Chiefs with the No. 10 overall pick of the 2017 draft, giving him the opportunity to work with a highly regarded offensive-minded coach in Andy Reid.
All Mahomes did was win the league MVP in his first year as a starter in 2018 behind 5,097 passing yards, 50 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions. Kansas City reached the AFC Championship Game before losing in heartbreaking style to the eventual champion New England Patriots, but it rectified that with a Lombardi Trophy in the signal-caller's second season as a starter.
The future remains bright for K.C., with the franchise cornerstone set to remain during his prime.
Now it just has to iron out the contract to make sure that prime is with the Chiefs.
