The Washington Redskins will have a crowded backfield in 2020, but offensive coordinator Scott Turner still sees Adrian Peterson as a useful piece.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday, Turner elaborated on how he plans to utilize Peterson:
John Keim @john_keim
On Adrian Peterson, Scott Turner said there’s a role for him even if he’s more a first-second down back. Helps with check downs; also this is a play-action based offense so he helps set that up.
Washington selected Derrius Guice in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft. Assuming he stays healthy—a big variable since he has made five career appearances—Guice would presumably be the team's No. 1 running option.
The former LSU star ran for 245 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.8 yards per carry in his limited action in 2019 after a 2018 torn ACL.
Washington also signed Peyton Barber to a two-year, $3 million deal and selected Memphis running back Antonio Gibson in the third round in April. Throw in 2019 fourth-rounder Bryce Love, who missed his rookie season because of knee surgery, and Turner has no shortage of options.
Peterson ran for 898 yards and five touchdowns on 211 carries for the team last season, and Washington exercised his 2020 option in February.
Although Turner spoke positively about the seven-time Pro Bowler, the Redskins would incur only a minor financial penalty if they were to jettison him this offseason. Cutting Peterson would add $750,000 in dead money but clear nearly $2.5 million in salary-cap space.
Based on Turner's comments, though, the coaching staff is approaching its preseason preparations with the idea Peterson will remain part of the offense.
