Jadeveon Clowney and the Seattle Seahawks came up short during Sunday's playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, but head coach Pete Carroll wants to run it back.
“He's a terrific football player and had a big impact on us,” Carroll said of the pass-rusher, per Joe Fann of NBC Sports Northwest. “We'd love to have him back.”
Gregg Bell of the News Tribune noted Carroll said bringing back Clowney would be a priority for the team.
Clowney told reporters he wants to win:
“I want to get that Super Bowl, by any means. That's what I'm looking for. Who's going to get me there? I'm not looking to get on no sorry team for no money. That ain't gonna fly. I'm not going to fight through all that just to lose 16 games and go home with my check. I hate that. That ain't what I'm doing. If I can't do that—I'm not going to no team that can't win.”
Seattle fits the bill. It has reached the playoffs in seven of the last eight years.
The Seahawks will not franchise-tag him, though, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported they promised not to do so when they traded for him prior to the season.
Clowney was solid for the Seahawks in 13 regular-season games with 31 tackles, three sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception. It marked a drop-off from his nine sacks last year and 9.5 sacks in 2017 as a member of the Houston Texans.
In fact, the three sacks represented his lowest mark since he was a rookie in 2014.
Clowney is just 26 years old and would elevate the Seattle defense if he did come back and played like he did in the past with the Texans. The team clearly wants to make that a reality given Carroll's comments.
