MLB, MLBPA Donate $1M to Emergency Food Services Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association are making a $1 million joint donation to Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“This joint donation represents an ongoing commitment by MLB and the MLBPA to provide support to causes that assist vulnerable populations,” the statement said.

According to CNN, doctors have confirmed more than 164,000 cases of COVID-19 across the world, including more than 4,000 in the United States.

MLB players are also aiding in the efforts to handle the consequences of the coronavirus.

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman donated 1,000 quarantine food kits to the Houston Food Bank, and teammate Lance McCullers Jr. donated 10,000 meals to the Houston Food Bank as well, per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. Astros outfielder George Springer also plans to donate $100,000 to help compensate employees at Minute Maid Park.

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Trevor Bauer also set up a GoFundMe to raise donations for game-day employees at Great American Ball Park. As part of his endeavor, Bauer organized a sandlot whiffle ball game and streamed it online.

As with every other major sports league, MLB is on hold to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

MLB officials initially delayed the start of the regular season by two weeks. On Monday, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred informed teams Opening Day will be pushed back even further after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended an eight-week moratorium on public events with more than 50 people.
