A two-year-old boy, pulled from the water near Petrie Island without vital signs, was pronounced dead Tuesday night, Ottawa police say.
Emergency services were called to the beach around 5:30 p.m. after a young child was reported missing.
A witness told Radio-Canada that the toddler was pulled out of the water by firefighters and then received CPR.
“Paramedics rushed the child to hospital where, despite medical interventions, he was pronounced deceased,” a police release said Tuesday.
Ottawa police said support was being offered to both the child's family and first responders.
“We offer our condolences to the family of the young boy,” the police said. “We also extend our thanks to the members of the public who also assisted in searching for him before emergency responders arrived.”
Police continue to investigate the cause of the death.
