One of the major storylines this NFL offseason has been the inability of the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott to come to an agreement on a long-term contract extension. But one agent believes Prescott is set up well being on the franchise tag.

“I don't love the franchise tag, but I would love to be Dak Prescott,” the unnamed agent told Ben Standig of The Athletic. “I think he's in the best situation of anyone.”

Another agent pointed out that it wasn't such a great situation for the Cowboys, however.

“Not getting a long-term deal done with Dak Prescott. Big miss for Dallas,” the agent said.

The major blunder for Dallas is that Patrick Mahomes completely reshaped the quarterback market this offseason, signing a record-setting 10-year, $503 million deal with up to $477 million in guaranteed-money mechanisms.

What’s the guarantee mechanism? Basically, the team guarantees Patrick Mahomes' salary a year out. And if they don’t pick up each guarantee, they have to cut him (to avoid picking up the future guarantee). https://t.co/dSzKmS7wbM

Mahomes has already been league MVP and won a Super Bowl, so he's on a unique trajectory so early in his career. But his deal will also have major ramifications for the quarterback market going forward, a fact that won't be lost on Prescott or his agent.

Had the Cowboys come to terms with Prescott before the Mahomes deal, they would have been looking at a deal toward the top end of the previous market. Whether they are yet willing to acknowledge it, that math has now changed.

Prescott is going to get paid very handsomely once he gets his new deal, be it with the Cowboys or in free agency next year. His $31.4 million franchise tag tender is already good money, but doesn't come with the guarantees and financial security a long-term deal brings.

Last season, the 26-year-old Prescott threw for career highs in yards (4,902) and touchdowns (30) with just 11 interceptions, completing 65.1 percent of his passes. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 93rd best player in the NFL last season.

So yes, his payday is coming. But, the Cowboys would have been wise to handle it sooner.
