LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal Friday, according to Shea Dixon of 247Sports.
“Brooks had a conversation with LSU's staff on Friday morning before making his decision to enter the portal,” Dixon wrote.
Brooks played 11 games as a reserve last year for the national champion Tigers, amassing eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Brooks, who was the No. 32 overall prospect in 247Sports' class of 2019 composite rankings, played at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He played outside linebacker, safety and wide receiver for the Marauders and earned a spot in the 2019 All-American Bowl.
Gabe Brooks, 247Sports' Midlands region recruiting analyst, compared him to ex-New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee in a 2018 scouting report and wrote the following:
“Tall, long, rangy athlete with outstanding frame. Good height and a huge wingspan. Bulking potential is very high given his frame. Dynamic athlete who shows outstanding playmaking ability on both sides of the ball. Dominant at times against strong competition in Texas' largest classification. Has shown impact playmaking ability at outside linebacker, receiver, and even DB. Projects to outside linebacker with a very high ceiling as a pass-rusher. Outstanding top-end speed relative to projected position. Explodes off the edge and closes fast. Dangerous in backside pursuit. Powerful striker. Scheme-versatile. Plays with a mean streak.“
Gabe Brooks gave Marcel Brooks perfect grades in pass-rush ability, striking ability and athleticism.
As Wilson Alexander of the Advocate noted, Brooks appeared in line for more playing time in 2020 and seemed ready “to help lead [the LSU] pass rush this fall.”
LSU head coach Ed Orgeron also praised his potential.
“As we all know, he's very fast, and once he catches on to the scheme, I think he's going to be an excellent linebacker,” he said in March.
With former Tigers linebackers K'Lavon Chaisson, Michael Divinity, Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen now in the NFL, the door was open for Brooks.
Alexander reported Brooks has the option of removing his name from the portal and returning to the program.
