The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes have reportedly started negotiating a long-term contract.
Per Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star, negotiations between the two sides are underway “in some form,” but it's “hard to know exactly where things stand” because neither side is talking about it.
Mellinger noted the deal will be “unlike any other,” with Mahomes poised to become the “highest-paid player in NFL history.”
Fellow agents are paying close attention to how Mahomes' agent, Chris Cabott, handles the negotiations.
“This is one of those contracts that could help all of us,” one agent told Mellinger.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told reporters prior to the Super Bowl that getting a deal done with Mahomes is “a priority,” but he said it may be “in the next 12 to 15 months.”
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in January that Mahomes could receive the NFL‘s first $200 million contract.
Among current quarterback contracts, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has the highest average annual salary ($35 million), while Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has the most fully guaranteed money ($94.5 million) and total value ($150 million).
Mahomes is currently set to earn $5.3 million between his base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus in 2020, per Spotrac. The 24-year-old was named NFL MVP in 2018 and Super Bowl LIV MVP after leading the Chiefs to a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
