Astros Reassign Team President Reid Ryan; Replaced by Jared Crane

The Houston Astros announced a shake-up to their front office structure Thursday involving Jared Crane and Reid Ryan.

Ryan, who is the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, will transition from team president to executive advisor, business relations in an effort to allow him to “focus on his other business ventures.” Crane, who is the son of Astros owner Jim Crane, will serve as Ryan's replacement.
In addition to his role with the Astros, Ryan is the president and CEO of Ryan-Sanders Baseball, Inc., which owns the Triple-A Round Rock Express and Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, which are both Astros farm teams.
The Astros hired Ryan as their team president in 2013, and he presided over the most successful period in team history.
Houston has reached the playoffs in four of the past five seasons and won at least 100 games in three straight. The Astros won the first World Series in franchise history in 2017, reached the American League Championship Series in 2018 and made it back to the World Series in 2019.
The Astros held a 3-2 series lead over the Washington Nationals in the 2019 World Series, but they were unable to hold it, as they lost Games 6 and 7 at home, giving the Nats their first World Series title in team history.
While the Astros have largely been viewed as a model franchise in recent years, they haven't been without controversy.
After the Astros beat the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the 2019 ALCS to advance to the World Series, then-Astros assistant general manager Brandon Taubman yelled, “Thank God we got Osuna! I'm so f–king glad we got Osuna!” toward a group of female reporters, including one who was wearing a purple bracelet for domestic violence awareness.
The Astros acquired closer Roberto Osuna from the Toronto Blue Jays last season in the midst of a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's policy against domestic violence. The charges against Osuna were dropped when the woman who made the allegations declined to travel from Mexico to Toronto to testify.
While the Astros initially released a statement in support of Taubman that said his “comments had everything to do with the game situation that just occurred and nothing else,” the team eventually issued an apology to Sports Illustrated writer Stephanie Apstein and fired Taubman.
The Astros did not indicate that the Taubman situation had anything to do with the reshuffling of their front office.
Crane will oversee the Astros during a key offseason, as ace Gerrit Cole is set to hit free agency and could leave the team with a significantly weakened starting rotation.
