Alabama quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who is the younger brother of ex-Crimson Tide and current Miami Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, per Matt Zenitz of AL.com.
Aaron Suttles of The Athletic provided more background: “Sources indicated he talked openly of transferring on multiple occasions. The writing was on the wall.”
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic did as well: “Going back to my Bama recruiting roots, Taulia told me on multiple occasions how he only wanted to go to Alabama just because it would be easier on his parents to go to games. He didn't want to be in Tua's shadow.”
247Sports ranked the younger Tagovailoa as the fifth-best pro-style quarterback and 180th-best prospect in the class of 2019. He had 14 offers, including from Florida, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska and Oregon.
The 5'11”, 208-pounder could be highly coveted. Charles Power of 247Sports provided the following scouting report Sept. 21, 2018:
“Shorter, compact frame, but does carry adequate weight. A solid athlete with good quickness and initial burst, but is not overly twitchy and has average long speed at best. Possesses a strong arm with the ability to generate substantial zip, particularly on short to intermediate passes. Capable of driving the ball down the middle of the field and making high difficulty far-hash throws. Arm strength and improvisational ability help him make creative off-platform plays. … Power 5 starter ability with the upside of being a highly productive college quarterback at a top program.“
Per Zac Al-Khateeb of Sporting News, the former Thompson High School standout had 7,504 passing yards and 71 touchdowns as a junior and senior.
As for Alabama's quarterback depth chart, Mac Jones, who took over for Tua Tagovailoa following the star's season-ending dislocated hip in November, figures to get the starting nod. Mike Rodak of AL.com listed him as the starter on the team's depth chart.
Taulia Tagovailoa was listed as the first backup. Paul Tyson and Bryce Young rounded out the group.
